I knew once the primmest old invalid lady who could well have offered her helplessness to God but had a grievance with Him because He had not permitted her to be eaten by a cannibal for the Faith; she could not accept herself as a sick woman but she would have achieved heroic virtue as a cutlet!
--Caryll Houselander, The Reed of God

I've forgotten what he said. But she can definitely be that way, as you well know. And much more than flippant. Makes me think of Flannery O'Connor.

Do you know if Flannery O'Connor mentioned Houselander in any of her own writing?

I can tell you (because I just looked) that CH's name does not appear in the index of FO'C's letters. But beyond that I don't know.
